10 Questions From A Fit Person

Adam: What do you do (Professionally)
Rae Kane: Pipefitter

Adam: Are health-related New Year’s resolutions a good stepping stone or just Holiday Remorse?
RK: It's good to have goals but why wait till the new year to make them? I never have.

Adam: What is one thing that you think that everybody should do for their health?
RK: Your body is like a swimming pool, if you've never taken care of one you might not know what that means. But basically you have to balance your acidity with your alkalinity. So if you're too acidic you get sick. Alkaline comes mostly from green vegetables. Sugar and meats make you acidic. A miracle cure for just about everything (including cancer, because cancer is a fungus) is sodium bicarb (baking soda) ironically they use that in swimming pools too.
Adam: How often do you exercise?
RK: 5 - 6 days a week. I work out that much because I have athletic goals. Someone who just wants to loose weight wouldn't have to work out that much.

Adam: What is your favorite exercise and why?
RK: Bike riding is my favorite because you can burn a lot of calories based on the fact that it's so easy... the hard part is finding the time to ride 15 miles. Running because we were born to run.. run barefoot that is... but again you have to find the time... 1 mile only burns about 100 calories. Insanity, the philosophy behind this fitness approach is to perform bursts of high intensity exercises followed by short rest periods. This type of routine helps you burn fat faster than any other conventional approach. P90x is based on muscle confusion which keeps you from plateauing.

Adam: How would you rank the importance of physical activity versus diet versus mental/spiritual wellbeing?
RK: Diet and spiritual wellbeing is more important that exercise. Many people think they can eat what ever they want if they exercise. But what they are not aware of is that there are 3000 calories in one pound. It takes a lot of exercise to lose one pound and as you get older it's even harder.

Adam: Healthy options are more accessible than ever; why is the US getting fatter?
RK: The US is fatter because they are counting calories and not nutrition. Our food is nutrition poor but full of calories. You are hungry because you need nutrition not calories.

Adam: You have two children in school. How do you feel about the availability of junk food in schools?
RK: We have one child in school, she won't eat school lunch but the lunch she takes isn't much better. I try to educate her but her mom/grandparents won't enforce anything. They think that since she is skinny that she can eat whatever she wants. They don't look at food as unhealthy/healthy.. like most they consider calories.

Adam: How do you stay healthy in your life?
RK: Paleo diet, meditation, exercise
Adam: How do you stay motivated?
RK: In order to be motivated you have to be invested in the future. My mom had a stroke 9 years ago and is confined to a wheel chair. Often you will ask someone why they do something unhealthy and their answer is.. I have to die some day... It's not about dying, dying is a bad thing for the people left behind but it's not necessarily bad for the person who dies. It's about the quality of life you have and will have when you are older. My mom was a very active person and I feel like a part of her died when she had that stroke. Even though she has her mind, she is not able to enjoy life to it's fullest and we are not able to do the things we used to together. Her stroke was cause by the HRT therapy she received, so besides the things you have listed medications can be unhealthy. It's not that I think Dr's are evil, but when people go to the Dr they want simple answers. They want everything to come in a pill, so that's what they give. Most people aren't willing to make life style changes or do the work to be healthy. Just like they are not willing to look inside themselves to fix their mental health issues.. they'd rather take a pill for that too.
